The Dirt Daubers will open the Spring 2013 season at the end of February in the PWB Winter War Tournament in Longview, TX. Returning to the scene of their latest two championship game contests, the Daubers look to continue their winning ways against a challenging field of teams.
Roster moves: The Daubers are pleased to announce the addition of Parker Hintz, Luke Alfaro and Tyler Williams, all of Tyler for the spring season. All experienced tournament players, these additions solidify an already-strong core of returning talent.
Returning to the team are Josue Rea and Ray Cook, both of Atlanta, TX. Josue and Ray both played for the Daubers in the spring of 2012 as part of their DETBA 12U runner-up season.
We are thrilled to have each of these players on board for the spring season. They join Pokey Best, a charter member since 2008, Daniel Wilbanks (joined 2011), Landon Dorman (2011), Nate Gibbons (2012), AJ Brown (2012), and Nene Dessesaure (2012).
The Dirt Daubers finished as the runner-up in the Lumberjack Classic in Longview the weekend of November 3, falling to the Bossier City Bulldogs 5-0. The Daubers made it to the championship game after they rallied from a 5 run deficit against the Texas Drillers in the semi-final game. A thrilling final inning propelled the Daubers into the finals.
Trailing 5-0, Oliver Tomboni led off with a singl
But they would have to hold off the top of the Drillers order to be victorious. Dalton Roberts led off with a bunt single, followed by a strong at bat from CJ Biggs, who worked a walk. Nene came in to pitch, getting Ethan Harris to ground back to the pitcher. Following an intentional walk to Hunter Neal, Nene got cleanup hitter Dillon Morris to ground to third, with a 5-3 FC getting the second out and allowing the infield to play straight away with two outs, but the winning run still on second.
Josh came in to face Michael Crutcher and on a 1-0 pitch he hit a soft pop that looked certain to fall in short center. But Red ranged deep from second an caught the ball to preserve and awesome comeback. It was one of the most thrilling Daubers victories of the season.
The Bulldogs were too much to handle in the final game, but great sportsmanship and a good game were enjoyed by all. The Daubers missed having some of their teammates there who were out of town, but really appreciate Oliver, Aron and Red for filling in.
The Daubers travel to Tyler next weekend for a USSSA tournament.
The Dirt Daubers took home the hardware on the weekend of October 6 in the Super Series tournament held in Longview, TX, defeating the East Texas Impact 2-1 in an incredible baseball game that had everyone in attendance on pins and needles. You couldn't ask for a better championship game.
Daniel Wilbanks pitched 7 full innings of solid baseball, surrendering just five hits while striking out nine and allowing just one unearned run. He kept the Daubers in the game with an assortment of breaking pitches, mixing up speeds and locations to keep a solid Impact lineup off balance. It was a big time performance from the Dauber pitcher.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, Josh Henry drew a leadoff walk after falling behind 0-2. Nate Gibbons followed with a double to the left-center gap to give the Daubers runners at second and third with nobody out. Pokey Best pounded a 3-2 breaking ball to the opposite field over the right fielder's reach for a 2-RBI double. It was the Daubers third extra-base hit of the game, and gave them the lead for the first time. It would be all Wilbanks would need.
Earlier in the ballgame, a single to right by the Impact looked to give them a two-run advantage with a runner in scoring position at second. Micah Chapman fired a shot Pokey Best at first, who relayed a perfect throw to Luke LaFoy at home plate. LaFoy tagged the runner out as he slid into home, a perfectly executed 9-3-2 out to keep the Daubers within a run.
The Daubers had previously defeated the Texas Drillers 8-3, the and Twin City Drillers twice by scores of 6-5 and 8-3. It was the Daubers first 4-0 tournament of the fall season.
